Cardiology remains a medical specialty and many aspect of care of Cardiac Patients involves life style changes and the use of medications to manage symptoms, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and the medical management of conditions such as heart failure. However, over the years with the advent of newer technologies many previously surgical therapies now fall in the Cardiologists domain. Examples of this include dealing with blocked arteries with balloon angioplasty and Coronary Stenting procedures, Pacemaker implantation, Electrical Cardioversion to deal with abnormal rhythms of the heart and techniques such as Ablation of parts of the hearts electrical system to cure some arrhythmias. Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery and the management of most significant heart valve problems still remains a surgical procedure and are not discussed here.
